A new way of reimagining coating systems for tablets and pellets

The pharmaceutical coating machines of the NCS Superior line represent the latest technological innovation — the state-of-the-art in coating pans — developed from Nicomac’s nearly fifty years of industry experience. These machines are capable of handling all types of core shapes, tablets, and pellets, and support a wide range of processes including film coating, sugar coating, and powder layering on pellets.

Two NCS Superior models: PSC – Perforated Super Coater and SWC – Solid Wall Coater.

Nicomac is the only company to offer both perforated and solid drum coaters — high-performance machines featuring a unique design and fully integrated with the exclusive ANIMA Artificial Intelligence platform.

PSC Perforated Super Coater

It features a perforated drum that allows a large volume of air to reach the tablet bed. A dedicated, quickly interchangeable exhaust system directs the airflow precisely where the tablets are positioned, adapting to the batch size to ensure optimal drying efficiency under any condition — while significantly reducing energy consumption. The specially designed blade-type mixing baffles minimize hole coverage and ensure perfect mixing in all processing conditions.

SWC Solid Wall Coater

It’s our solid drum coater — the ideal solution for sugar coating and pellet production. Our patented Blow Master® drying system (Patent No. 102003901171946) is the result of years of continuous technical evolution. It delivers high performance, minimal loss of product in suspension, and zero turbulence in the spray zone, effectively replicating the drying efficiency of a perforated pan. Blow Master® features automatic airflow adjustment based on batch size, directing air precisely onto the tablets.

Thanks to in-depth studies and extensive operational testing, Nicomac has developed highly efficient mixing baffles specifically for solid pan coaters: the 3D Shark Fin Baffle®.

The Advantages of Nicomac Pharmaceutical Coating Pans

Durability and Reliability

Nicomac’s pharmaceutical coating pans are designed to ensure long life and perfect air and water sealing. The drum is sealed with two energized V-seals. The AISI 316L stainless steel undergoes a special treatment that guarantees surface hardness, wear resistance, high-temperature stability, resistance to abrasion and stress, corrosion resistance, and dimensional stability. Additionally, the drum remains perfectly sealed during washing phases, ensuring optimal performance and longevity.

Flexibility

The innovative design of the drum and mixing baffles, combined with the adjustable spray gun arm (patent application No. 102021000017075), allows the Superior coating pans to operate from 15–20% up to 100% of their capacity without the need for any component replacement.

The SCHLICK spray guns, made from AISI 316L stainless steel, are mounted on a sliding arm (patent application No. 102021000017075) equipped with an electric motor. This system automatically adjusts the distance between the guns and the product bed according to the batch size or processing phase. Compact and consistent in their spray pattern, the guns feature automatic control of atomization and spray fan, effectively preventing clogging. The ergonomic arm is fully adjustable and can be easily removed from the front of the coater.

Ease of Use

Nicomac has designed and patented an innovative system that allows for the complete discharge of tablets simply by reversing the drum rotation. This fast and intuitive process requires no tools and is made possible by fixed welded discharge chutes, ensuring optimal efficiency and streamlined operation.

Software

The PLC-PC control system, featuring a user-friendly interface and fully compliant with CFR 21 Part 11, offers multiple password levels and can store up to 100 recipes to ensure process repeatability. A synoptic display shows both set and real-time parameters.

The system monitors and controls key variables such as airflow rate, pan rotation speed, negative pressure, product temperature, spray gun atomization, and other critical process data. It generates graphs, batch reports, alarm lists, maintenance management alerts, and includes manuals along with digital and analog I/O.

The process is driven by precise control of inlet and outlet air temperature and humidity, as well as product temperature, with automatic regulation of the peristaltic pump to ensure consistent and efficient coating results.

Cleaning

Nicomac’s expertise in Washing and Clean In Place (WIP/CIP) technology has led to the development of an advanced, cGMP-compliant system, ideal for validated cleaning of coating pans. Both models are equipped with rotating spray balls (divospheres) that ensure thorough cleaning of every internal surface.The control system fully automates all cleaning phases — including washing, rinsing, fluid drainage, and drying — with a wide range of programmable recipes for maximum flexibility and repeatability. A mobile skid unit is included, featuring: a 10-bar high-pressure wash pump; detergent tank and pump; membrane drainage pump; hoses, valves, and actuators; a control panel with integrated pneumatic and electronic components; this turnkey solution guarantees reliable, efficient, and fully validated cleaning cycles.

Film and Sugar coating

Nicomac coating pans are capable of coating pellets, tablets, multivitamins, soft and hard capsules, and complex-shaped cores using either polymeric film or sugar solutions, ensuring fast, uniform, and high-quality results.

For sugar coating, the innovative Sugar By-Pass system maintains consistent product temperature during spray pauses by diverting airflow directly to the exhaust through a three-valve bypass. A 1:30 pneumatic pump applies sugar solutions with concentrations as high as 80%, while specialized AIRLESS spray guns ensure uniform atomization through high-pressure delivery. The solution is continuously recycled to prevent crystallization during bypass phases or spray interruptions, ensuring smooth and efficient processing throughout.

R&D

Nicomac provides top-level professional support for R&D and testing, in partnership with Euronovis — a GMP-certified company specialized in the nutraceutical market. This collaboration allows us to offer: recipe development consulting; testing on coating machines ranging from 1 kg to 400 kg; coating process expertise; cosmetic film coating; gastro-resistant and controlled-release applications; sugar coating; a wide range of RAL colors for precise color matching; in-depth quality testing: hardness, friability, disintegration tests.
